Far from the Madding Crowd ★★★
Director: Thomas Vinterberg
Cast: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, Michael Sheen, Juno Temple
This film is based off the Thomas Hardy novel of the same name. Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) finds herself torn between three different potential suitors who are all after her hand in marriage. As she explores the possibilities of each suitor, she explores the possibility of being in love and being in a relationship. But she must face some obstacles in her path to finding love.
Michael Sheen plays the wealthy older man who is trying to win her over with promises of caring for her and protecting her. Tom Sturridge plays the flamboyant Sergeant Troy and Matthias Schoenaerts plays the silent and smouldering Gabriel Oak.
Mulligan is brilliant in this and gets to shine in the lead part. All three suitors play their parts well also but unfortunately Schoenaerts and Mulligan seem to lack any real chemistry.
It’s beautifully shot, the costumes are wonderful and the sets have brilliant attention to detail.
It is a bit slow paced but it is well written. “Far from the Madding Crowd” is a beautiful and touching film.
