Man Up ★★★★
Director: Ben Palmer
Cast: Simon Pegg, Lake Bell, Olivia Williams, Rory Kinnear
Man Up follows Lake Bell who plays Nancy, a thirty-year-old-something single woman who is on her way to her parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. But when she meets a woman on a train who hands her a self-help book, thus resulting in her meeting Jack (Simon Pegg) and accidentally going on a blind date with him. But when they hit it off, she finds herself immersed in a web of lies.
Matters are also made worse when Jack’s ex-wife shows up stirring up old feelings and Nancy finds out a man who has been stalking her who also knows the truth about her and threatens to expose her lies.
Thus begins a series of mishaps and crazy on goings for the couple. Simon Pegg and Lake Bell both put on brilliant performances. Both are very funny and appear to be putting everything into their performances. It is apparent that they have taken relish in their roles and it comes off quite well in their performances.
It gets a bit far-fetched in parts but it’s a funny film with plenty of laugh out loud moments. Man Up is a surprisingly funny film and one of the best British rom-coms to have come out in the last few years.
