Cast: Michelle Williams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Matthias Schoenaerts, Margot Robbie, Ruth Wilson, Sam Riley
Suite Française takes place in World War II in France. The film is based on the novel by Irène Némirovsky.
Suite Française is about Lucile (Michelle Williams), a young woman living alone with her mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas) in a French village, struggling to survive whilst also waiting on news of her husband. Her husband is away fighting in Second World War leaving her feeling isolated and neglected. But when the village is overtaken by German soldiers, she finds herself drawn to the soldier, Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts), who has taken up residence in her home. It doesn’t take long for her to see he is not like the other soldiers.
The film gives the audience a real feeling of the war as the film goes on. The film depicts it quite well. It is wonderfully shot and has great attention to detail. All the cast play their roles well although the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired.
This is a story about forbidden love and the everyday survival people had to endure during the Second World War.
