Eddie the Eagle is inspired by true events and tells the story of Michael Eddie Edwards, the tenacious British ski-jumper who never gave up. Eddie (Taron Egerton) has dreamt of competing in the Olympics since he was a young boy, and practised tirelessly much to his dad’s annoyance who wants Eddie to join him in the world of plastering.
When Eddie is cut from the Olympic ski team, you would think at this point that you would give up, but not Eddie. His dreams of making the Olympics might be over, but the Winter Olympics is still an option. So he impulsively leaves the UK for Garmisch in Germany, to be a ski jumper. It’s here where we are introduced to Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), a onetime ski-jump sensation, but now drives a snowplow on the slopes with his hip-flask at hand.
After some resistance Bronson agrees to “coach” Eddie if only to get him off his back. But Eddie’s sincere charm and never give up attitude wins him over, seeing Eddie qualifying for the Winter Olympics and making history at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Though Eddie came last in the Olympics, he won hearts everywhere and more importantly delivered a message to not only sports people but to the world over, that no matter how many times you are told no, or how many times you’re knocked down, you come back fighting each time with the same determination to succeed, which is what Eddie did. When you consider that Eddie was not your typical sportsman, he didn’t let that stop him from trying. I think a lot of sports people of today, could learn a lot from Eddie’s fortitude.
Eddie the Eagle is a wonderfully heart-warming film, that although may play with some of the facts around the actual events, the message still rings strong. Taron Egerton puts in an endearing performance that warms your heart, which plays perfectly opposite Hugh Jackman’s rough but charismatic character.
Eddie the Eagle is an absolute must see!
